FEATURE: JUJU IN FOOTBALL,TESTIMONY IN RTU-TUFC MATCH

06 March, 2012

Tamale was very busy over the weekend for the one single match that attracted football fans to the Tamale sports stadium to witness highly thrilling and a seemingly tension packed match between Real Tamale United and Tamale Utrecht FC.

However the issue of juju that is normally giving prominence especially in local derbies in Ghanaian football was part of the division one league clash that RTU won by two goals.

Juju has gained prominence and has become a major tool to decide results of highly profiled matches.

This is reminiscent in matches involving Kotoko and Hearts, Kotoko and RTU or Hearts and RTU when the latter was involved in premiership campaign.

A very good example was a match RTU needed to win against Asante Kotoko in Tamale, about five years ago. In the said match RTU had to wait for a black dove to fly into the stadium and pegged on the Kotoko post before the only goal of the match could be scored by Kabiru Imoro.

Prior to the RTU goal, a Kotoko defender who had made unsuccessful efforts to drive away the dove, got himself into trouble as he receive a marching off orders from the referee later in the game for indecent play and was also inured in that tackle.

This season in Accra, Hearts of oak could only manage a point against Asante Kotoko in the premier league first round match after the field was swept with brooms tied in Hearts colours apparently to drive away Kotoko spirits before kick off. There were also reports of a black cat appearing at the middle of the game that witnessed countless missed opportunities.
The Real Tamale United, Tamale Utrecht match got its share of the Juju menace as supporters of both sides tried to tilt results in their favour before the match. Both sides predicted for only two goals in the match and were engineering in black magic to tilt the results in their favour.

The dramatic thing happen when in the full glare of supporters and during the teams warm-up, the acting CEO of the club, Mr. Abu Nurudeen walked into the pitch alongside the centre line to the middle of the field and dropped pellets from his packet and walked away to the other side of the field.

Probably, the actions of the CEO per his belief could have provided victory for his side that claimed all three points on the day.

‘I can now sleep tonight after earning victory that I had toiled for nights to make juju against Utrecht for us to beat them’ Remarked an elated supporter of RTU.
